The Issue: The successful diversion of wasted food and other organics from landfills is essential to the long term health of our planet, and is chiefly hindered by a lack of commercial composters who accept wasted food.
What We Know
We send tons of food to landfills – more than any other material. Food in landfills contributes to climate change. We need healthy soil. Composting creates healthy soil and reduces the need for irrigation and fertilizer. People are really bad about separating materials into different bins. Compostable foodservice packaging helps keep food out of landfills.
What is Being Done
The States and municipalities are restricting organics in landfills. Eco-Products’ Sustainability Maven is on the board of the US Composting Council. Congress has proposed two bills aimed at addressing wasted food. Eco-Products’ VP of Products Strategy & Development is the president of the Biodegradable Products Institute board. The ReFED report quantified the problem of wasted food and identified solutions. Eco-Products is actively engaged with the Foodservice Packaging Institute, Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and others to identify and address composting barriers. Eco-Products advances zero waste systems and helps customers be better stewards of the environment.
